The Rising Venus…Art… bold and beautiful!
Though his images hardly look shocking now, Wingate Paine caused quite a stir when he published his book of photographs Mirror of Venus in 1966. Comprising pictures of three women dressed down to their birthday suits and featuring copy by Françoise Sagan and Federico Fellini, the volume instantly blew off the racks and has since proved one of the touchstones of the sexual revolution. The Resurrection stores in New York City and Los Angeles have been selling editions of Mirror of Venus for years; tonight, the West Coast branch is giving Paine his due with a show of his original prints for the book. “Paine prints are quite rare,” explains Resurrection’s Katy Rodriguez. “He sort of walked away from photography shortly after publishing Mirror of Venus, and destroyed all his negatives. So it’s a really nice treat for us to be able to show this work.” Indeed, the event tomorrow night—hosted by L.A. luminaries Kelly Lynch, Lisa Eisner, Arianne Phillips, Roman Alonso, Mitch Glazer, and Mark Seliger—marks the first time Rodriguez has staged an exhibition at her store. And as an additional homage to Paine, she’s taken a crop of one of Paine’s Mirror of Venus photos and is using the image in a capsule collection of clothing for men and women. “The women’s stuff is all printed on silver, sheen-y, silk wool,” notes Rodriguez, “so it has a very photographic feel. Like a negative.”
